modem install failed

DUMMY

i tried to install a new modem (2-different brands)only to
make it all the way through the driver install process to
get the message, "hardware install failed", the last try
was with a u.s. robotics modem. thier tech support says
its a microsoft problem with a hardware layer issue.
knowledge base # q237566 and it will have to be corrected
before any future attempt will be accepted. i being the
computer dummy that i am, read the article and i am still
lost.. WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO TO MAKE THIS INSTALL WORK???
any help greatly appreceiated!!!
windows xp home labeled as a ACPI UNIPROCESSOR PC..

Are you talking about a proprietary system. They usually have
crippled OEM versions to force you to buy from them at greatly
inflated prices.
