What does "just got it" mean exactly in reference to Windows XP?
What brand name and model of computer are we talking about?
Is this a brand new computer that came with Windows XP pre-installed?
Or was the hard drive formatted and then Windows XP clean installed?
Or was Windows XP an upgrade from a previous version of Windows?
If so, what version of Windows did you upgrade from?
Are we talking about Windows XP Home Edition or Professional Edition?
Is Service Pack 1 installed?
What modem exactly are we talking about?
Who is your ISP?
It sounds like you better be careful here and make sure that once
you do get the modem working that you have the XP Internet Connection Firewall
enabled or some functioning third-party firewall enabled BEFORE you EVER
connect to the Internet or you will probably be a prime candidate for infection
by the msblaster worm or one of its variants. All XP critical updates need to be installed
after the successful connection to the Internet with a firewall enabled.
