Modem driver "data is invalid."

Lo all,

Just bought a new PCI modem for my XP box - the
manufacturer is some fly-by-night, but the chipset is an
ESS ES28385. The latest driver for XP for this chipset
off of ESS' website is recognised by XP as a driver
for "ESS ES56H-PI Data Fax Voice Modem" which sounds about
right. The driver is unsigned by Microsoft; XP complains
and I ignore it. XP then comes back with the stunningly
descriptive message "An error occurred during the
installation of the device. The data is invalid."

I've clipped the bit of setupapi.log that corresponds to
all of this going on, in case it helps someone understand
whats going on:

This is a registry protection prob
in XP.

You have to go to start/run and type regedit.

Then go here.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCI

Under this, you'll see

VEN_1033&DEV_0035&SUBSYS_00359710&REV_41
etc.

Click on each of these entries, until
you get to the entry which shows that modem.

Highlight it, right mouse button,
then permissions.

Then tick Full control. OK. Then quit
regedit. You'll have to reboot, for
XP to detect and install the drivers
for the modem. The only thing is, any
other PCI cards, you install will
bring up that same "data is invalid" error.

The only way to get rid of it, is to reformat
And it may fix it.
