Modem/Dial-up problems

Everytime I go to play a game online via the internet, my modem stops
receiving data and it takes upto 30 seconds before it starts receiving
again, so I can never connect to any games severs.

The problem happens when a program/game opens/loads and changes the
resolution of the screen etc, the modem just seems to stop doing anything
and it can be heard making the noise it makes when it first tries to connect
to the internet.

It's bloody annoying, I've got all the latest drivers installed for it and
no resource conflicts, so I'm out of ideas as to what it can be!?

HELP!!!!! (please!) :-)

Could it be microsoft firewall, try disabling it?
