DELETING A DOWNLOADED DEMO

When I was searching for a Halloween screen saver for the
grandkids through the links found on my Microsoft
Download Manager, I found an advertisement
from 'Downloadalot' for a "Modem Boost". Since it was
linked to a trusted site, I downloaded the demo. Not I
can not delete it! Everytime I try, my computer freezes
up. And the last time I tried to delete it, I had to shut
down without closing out because after opening Task
Manager to shut it down, nothing happened. When I turned
the computer back on, it ran a DSKCHK and deleted
ListCache1.dat in Index $130 in file 47376, and
Listcache.dat in Index $130 in file 47376 (whatever all
that means!)

How can I delete this nightmare? Going to Explore doesn't
work because the file doesn't show up there although it
should. Going through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
is the one that freezes up. I want this piece of kaka out
of my computer. I went to the website and was going to
ask about deleting it, but they are clever, after filling
out a screen to send a comment, the "Send" button just
took me to an order site! No matter where I tried to go
in the website, I ended up at an order site.

I want these people to suffer incalcuable pain. Help me
give it to them and tell me how I can delete this!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Well, the only thing that works for me if i want to delete
something, that won't uninstall, is DOS. If it's a small
program I would just delete it in dos - you have to know
the path though. Go to start>run and type in CMD. It opens
DOS. Type in (without qotes):
"cd\" press enter
then select the drive ex. "c:"
then go to the location ex. "cd folder" = c:/folder/
then go on like that ex. "cd screensaver" =
c:/folder/screensaver

So if the installed crap is in there, say this:
"del c:/folder/screensaver"

it will ask you if ur sure, say yes (Y)

Give us the link to the site, and we'll look at the
piece of junk in order to see what kind of tentacles
it has. They are usually poorly written and single
tracked apps, so they can be pooped out pretty easily.

Somehow "Modem Boost" tickled an old grey brain cell and "spyware"
was the word on the tip of my tongue.

So www.google.com for

+spyware +"modem boost" +uninstall

(the "+" tells google "I really mean it, only results with that in it)

found something. It isn't free, and I don't know about the quality,
but it turns up a product that claims to uninstall nasty spyware that
just won't go away otherwise. And "Modem Boost" is one of the items
that are hidden in the list of keywords that google looks at. The
site spews popups and cookies at you, you've been warned. But that
might be the way for you to get rid of this.

But with this hint someone else might find other solutions to this.

Considering XP is not written on or over DOS and
thererfore doesn't have it your post is a little scarey.
The command line interface is not DOS. It is a DOS
emulator but it isn't DOS. In order to more thorougly
clean out a program that will not allow you to delete it
your must go into the registry. This isn't as scarey as it
sounds and is really quite easy. go>start\run and type in
regedit and hit ok. Now click edit at the top and then
find and type in the name of the program. Now when a
folder comes up in the left pane that has that programs
name simply right click on it and delete it. If it is just
a sub key in the right panel then right click on it there
and delet. Now click edit an find next. This may take
several attempts too get all the entries and you need to
do this deleting as you go until you get a "regedit has
finished searching the registry" box. When in doubt always
right click and export to a file of your choice. Like "my
documents" This will create a backup that you can
reinstall by double clicking on if you need to and have
accidently deleted the wrong entry. Once you are sure all
is well then you can delete the exported(backup) reg
entries. Keep smiling.
