Modem and Router issue

J

jc

My ISP is AT&T (SBC) Yahoo DSL.

I am on a Desktop using a Speedstream 4100 DSL modem.

I recently purchased a D-Link WBR 1310 wireless router so I could
connect to the Internet via a Toshiba Satellite (laptop).

All of the connections from the CPU to the modem and router are
correct.

Problem: When surfing the Internet on the Desktop and the laptop
simultaneously, within about one hour the desktop loses Internet
connectivity, which ultimately affects the Internet connectivity of
the laptop.

I have been informed that there may be a DHCP on both the modem and
the router and they may be canceling each other out. If this is
correct, how do I disable one of them and does it matter which one?

If this is not correct, any ideas of what could be causing the issue?

Comments appreciated.

Hello jc,

Log in to your modem or router over the webinterface. The ip you can find
in your documetation and also if you do an ipconfig /all on your workstation.
But maybe you only found one default gateway ip, than shut down the modem
or router and do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig / renew. If the second
also has setup a DHCP server it should provide you a diferent or maybe also
the same default gateway ip. Than open it with the webinterface and configure
it like your documentation says.

Best regards
