HELP!!!!! I've been experiencing problems with my system for few days now,
kept getting "bad cluster" reports. Now my "Add/RemovePrograms" icon has
disappeared, I can't open up Device Manager, and I keep getting a MMC.EXE
application error message---"applic failed to intialise properly (OxcOOOO33)
". How do I fix this? Are these problems inter-related?

Just like the Robot in "Lost in Space" waving his arms and saying
"Danger, Will Robinson - Danger" you've probably got a drive in
the process of failing.

You need to backup your irreplaceable data, right away. Normally,
a Chkdsk with Repair or Fix qualifiers is called for. But, since this
seems to be a cascading failure you may not have allot of time to
get your data off the drive. Also, since bad clusters are indicated, a
Chkdsk may result in even more data loss than you're currently
experiencing.

If you have the capability to burn CD-R/DVD-R disks backup
your primary data (My Docs, Email stores, etc). Or better yet, do
a system image. After you've got your data safely off the PC then
you can do a Chkdsk C: /R. -or- Go to the drive manufacturers
web site and download their disk diagnostic program ( Either on
a bootable floppy or an .Iso CD-R image).

Chkdsk the drive to check the health status of HDD.
Try a repair installation.

THANKS! You obviously know what you're talking about--unfortunately, you're talking to a Grade-1 idiot who just about knows how to turn on his pc! Are you saying my hard drives knackered and my best bet is to load my system reload cd that I got when I bought my pc? Told you I was stupid.....

You're not stupid - But unfortunately we don't have any criteria to
know the poster's level of expertise. Years ago, when I worked in
corporate America - I told someone we didn't need Picture ID badges
but ones that had our IQs posted on them.
Essentially, you just need to get your personal data backed up, in
case the disk drive fails completely. If you use the recovery disks it
will/can erase all your collected data. Find a local PC shop that can
do the backup and disk check for you. Smaller, locally owned shops
are best - they will quote you a price up front. If the drive is defective
they could replace the disk and move your existing data to it.
The first assumption in XP-General is that poster's are looking for
advice to fix or resolve their own issues. We sometimes forget that
many folks just want a simple answer on what to do or where to go
and get help.

Stupid is *not* the word - you are wise enough to ask for advice!

The problems you mention indicate that your hard drive may be going bad. If
you have any personal and irreplaceable data that you simply would not want
to lose, you must back it up NOW! Take your system to a reputable repair
shop. They can run diagnostics on the machine and determine exactly what's
wrong. If you need help backing up your personal data, ask them to help you
before they work on the machine.

Once again, thanks (and to you, too, jopa)for your advice. I've already backed up my personal files etc.. As my local shops charge a small fortune for repair work (I know what their hourly rate is, I've already checked!) I'm gonna bite the bullet and stick in my reload cd. If that doesn't work, I've got a very heavy hammer to hand.....
I like the IQ idea on identity cards, but I don't think there's enough
negative numbers to cover me and my work colleagues!!
