MM2 and dark image in observer window

The camera is a JVC GR DVL 805 Digital movie camera. It came with a cable
that fits into the camera on 1 end and the other fits into the computer, a
fairly recently built one.

It is USB and the other is Firewire.

The thing I noticed though, is that the monitor window in MM2 shows the
images taken at night very dark, almost black, whereas on the monitor window
of the camera they were fine.

Is that attributable to MM2? The images look very normal, considering it was
taken at night, in the viewfinder and camera flip-out screen.

What might be the problem?

I am using Windows XP SP2, plenty of RAM and a separate HD for video.

What does this bit mean, a usb cable is totally different to a firewire
cable, they cannot be interchanged or one end usb the other firewire.
Firewire is best for capturing, usb is poor and often leads to compressed
capture which could affect the quality of the movie.

images taken at night very dark, almost black, whereas on the monitor window
of the camera they were fine.

It may depend on the brightness of the cam screen and how well set up the pc
monitor is.

Is that attributable to MM2? The images look very normal, considering it was
taken at night, in the viewfinder and camera flip-out screen.

It will capture whatever is on the tape if you use firewire, so shouldn't
make a difference to what you capture, but it may just appear darker on
screen.

What might be the problem?

I am using Windows XP SP2, plenty of RAM and a separate HD for video.

Try connecting the cam to a tv and watch it on that. Also export the same
video back from pc to cam and watch that on the tv, it should be the same
result as the first. If both the same then all is ok, if both dark then the
cam screen shows up as being lighter than what is recorded and you need to
compensate for this yourself in how you record or adjust the brightness of
the cam lcd screen. If they both show up light, as you felt was recorded,
then the pc monitor may need adjusting or you may need to compensate for how
MM shows your movie in the preview screen, which is just a "preview" screen.

How does normal daylight video show up? Darker? Lighter? the same?
