Mixed mode domain, server manager doesn't work on NT4 BDC

Just upgraded my nt4 domain to AD. But I'm not sure that my NT4 BDC is
talking to my 2K/AD server. If I open server manager on the DC it says that
it's unable to find a domain controller for the domain and that I can
continue but some functions might not be available. After this I just get a
white screen for a while then the error pops up again.

I also get the same error if I open usermanager on the NT4 BDC, no domain
controller found for the domain. If I check the security logs on both
servers, it seems that all teh authentication is currently being performed
by the BDC. Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks.

Well, you can be pretty sure that the NT BDC is NOT talking to the
Win2000 server.

DNS (or maybe in this case NetBIOS) usually.

Different subnets, right? (If they were on the same subnett they could
use broadcasts to find each other...

Unless, you didn't disable NetBIOS on the Win2000 did you?
(NIC\IP\Advanced\WINS tab)

If it's different subnets you will likely need WINS server.

Herb, thanks for the reply.

The servers are on the same subnet and I have wins running on both servers.
If I check the wins manager on either box, they seem to be talking and are
setup to push/pull.

Are the clients -- including the WINS servers, and DCs, themsevles using
these
WINS server in their NIC\IP\Adv\WINS tab.

Every machine, servers too, needs to REGISTER itself with WINS
to be findable by NetBIOS.

BUT that isn't likely your problem since it's same network and
BROADCASTS can work just fine on a single segment.
I also have DNS setup on the AD server and have it set as the only DNS
server on the NT4 BDC. THey are both able to resolve each other on the for
pings and such. DNS appears to be setup properly as well. NSLOOKUP responds
as expected from either server and I have my forwarders all setup
correctly.

Every machine in SAME domain? All NT machines using the NetBIOS
version of the DNS Domain name? (e.g., LearnQuick and LearnQuick.Com
are my two names.)

Maybe you should try DCDiag on the DC and netdiag on the others.
(Support Tools -- install from server CD-ROM) Send results to a
text file and start by searching for WARN, BLOCK, and ERROR.

Post an IPConfig /all text capture too.

Try a variety of
Ping Name
Ping name.domain.com
Ping IpAddress
Net View
Net View \\ServerName
Net View \\ServerName.Domain.Com
Net View \\IP.Addr.ess.1

Record results....
