I need to back up the registry. I upgraded to XP from
Win98. An obscure note in the knowledge base says the
backup utility is NOT installed with XP but CAN be found
on the install CD. Not true. I searched everything on the
XP CD and the backup utility isn't there. Where can I
find it?? Thanks (anxiously waiting)

So what was obscure in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302894? If it is not on the CD, what CD do you have? OEM or retail? If OEM, you'll have to contact whomever you bought the software since they have to provide the support and it could be some bastardized vendor-specific OEM version (which may not have everything that Microsoft puts on their CDs).

Home Edition?

In Pro you can find it here: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP
Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP
Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs for Windows XP
Home edition.

To manually install Backup for a Home "retail" version:

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows
XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup: CD-ROM Drive
:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition

You do not want to use that to back up the registry anyway. For general
purposes, the registry is backed up daily as part of the days System
Restore Point. If you want an independent backup of it, get the free
