My computer is advising me that I am missing
the "shell.dll" file. Without it a couple of my programs
will not run. On the Windows XP Home Edition CD there is
a 'SHELL.DL_' but I can't convert it.

Can someone tell me how I can copy this file from
somewhere to my computer. I really don't want to do a
reinstall.

My email address is '(e-mail address removed)' and thank you
for your help!!

the underscore probably means it's compressed. I don't know how to extract it, though. (shell.dll is still around? isn't it shell32.dll?)

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

In that, if your CD letter is D: for example (check with a Dir D: to
make sure) give
Expand D:\i386\shell.dl_ C:\Windows\system32\shell.dll
