Missing \windows\system32\config\system file

Hi there,
Can someone please help? One of our machines has started playing up at
boot, not even going into safe mode properly.
When we do get it started, we get told the following file is missing:
\windows\system32\config\system
and then
you can try and attempt to repair by starting windows original setup cd
select 'r' at the first screen to repair
whatever we do it goes into a loop refiring windows to the message
above
Can someone tell us how to restore this missing file so that we can
start the machine?
Many thanks.
Regards,
Dave.

Try this method on the Windows XP CD ;)

Boot from the Windows XP CD, but instead of pressing R right away,
choose to install. Once Windows Setup has searched your computer for
existing Windows installations, it will tell you it found an existing
installation and offer to automatically repair. This saves a lot of
trouble of playing with the Recovery Console.

Also, on a side note: If you plan on testing beta products, you may want
to invest in something like Norton Ghost to make backups before you go
and mess with things ;)

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the tip - I'll try exactly that later.

Yes, indeed. Beta testing and the pleasures therein! This is a machine
that just sits in the corner doing nothing vital, but I hate
reformatting and reinstalling fully unless I really have to!

Thanks for the tip.

Regards,
Dave.
