Somehow, while adding a user to XP (Media Center version) my original and
'administrator' user has disapperared.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to recover it, recyle bin etc?

I would sure like him back...

thanks,
JWB

Hello,

The built-in administrator account only appears on the welcome screen until another user account is
not created. Once another user account is created, the 'administrator' account does not appear any
more. You can make the administrator account visible on the welcome screen by the following method:

The administrator account can be enabled to appear on the welcome screen through TweakUI. Under
TweakUI, navigate to the logon section and put a check next to "Show Administrator on Welcome
Screen". TweakUI can be downloaded from:

This is by design. When you create another user with administrative
privileges, the built-in Administrator account is no longer visible. It
is still there and can be accessed by doing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice at the
Welcome Screen to get the classic logon box. You can then type in
"Administrator" and its password. If you want to have the Administrator
account show on the Welcome Screen, MVP Kelly Theriot has a tweak here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - Enable/Disable
Administrator on the Welcome Screen (Line 5)

Please bear in mind that it is not good practice to use the built-in
Administrator account for every-day use. It should be used only as a
failsafe account.

Thanks that is great info....

Up to now I have only used the 'default administrator' account, and so my
desk top and bookmarks etc are all with it, and now 'not visible.'

In order to use XP the way it is used, I would like to use one of the new
users I have created, BUT I would like to TRANSFER all the settings I had
with the now hidden administrator account. Is it possible?

Thanks so much.

Pegasus posted this earlier:
First you must establish the exact environment you want,
preferably while using a non-admin account: Desktop colours,
location of shortcuts, EMail settings etc. etc. You then do this:
1. Reboot the PC.
2. Log on as an admin.
3. Control Panel / System / Advanced / User Profiles
4. Click the standard user's profile, then copy, then select
this destination: c:\documents and settings\default user.

Every user who logs on for the very first time will now
inherit the standard profile. Pre-existing users won't be
affected.

Absolutely. Make a new user account for yourself and copy the
Administrator settings and data over. Here's a link explaining how:

Copy a User Account -

One thing the article above leaves out is that you must log into the new
account at least once before you can copy anything to it.

As you've discovered, once any additional user administrative
accounts have been created, the built-in Administrator account will no
longer be displayed on the Welcome Screen. This is a default security
feature. By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account
of WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login
dialog box.

The built-in Administrator account really isn't intended to be used
for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to rename
the account, set a strong password on it, and use it only to create
another account for regular use, reserving the Administrator account as
a "back door" in case something corrupts your regular account(s).
