I have several user accounts that no longer show up in
the login screen. One is the administrator! I try to
recreate the account and windows tells me that it is
already there, though it is not in the available list.
How can I make the users show up again in the login list
of users?

Hi, Tommy -

An easy workaround is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete *twice* at
the graphical login screen. XP Professional will then
present you with a normal login screen where you can type
in the name of any account you like.

Another solution is to force XP to show the Administrator
logon - this will require a little registry tweaking:

1. Start the Registry Editor:

2. Browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

3. In the right pane, add a new DWORD value
called 'Administrator' (no quotes)

4. Set the value to 1.

5. Close regedit and reboot.

Hope this helps -

An administrator account is created when XP is first
installed. However, when any further accounts are
created, this administrator account disappears and is
only available when you boot into safe mode (press F8
during the boot process). You should create another
acount with admin rights for general daily use. If other
user accounts are disappearing, then I'm not sure what is
causing that. Do they show up in the user accounts
properties (in control panel)?
