Missing user account at log-on screen

Howdy: My neighbor is missing one of her user accounts at the log-on
screen (her husbands). I can see the account in User Accounts in
Control Panel and everything looks fine in there. I did this from the
Administrator log-on. The missing account has administrator
privileges. How do I get this puppy back without losing all the data??

Thanks.

The account is probably hidden. You can log on to it by
pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice in succession, then typing the
account name and password.

To make the account visible on the logon screen, run regedit.exe
and navigate to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\Us
erList

If the account name is listed on the right-hand side, delete that line.
You will now see it from the logon screen.

Your post suggests that your neighbour does not believe in
backing up his files. All important files must be backed up
to an independent medium at regular intervals, e.g. once a
week. A hard disk in a USB case is a very effective and low
cost backup medium. Your neighbour might not agree now
but he will after he's lost some really important information It's
usually a painful lesson to learn.

Thanks for help. I'll try it out tomorrow. Yeah, I think they
understand how fragile their info can be without adequate backup. They
are a couple of elderly neighbors and don't have much on the 'puter,
but they do have some photos that would have been lost. I think this
little episode will convince them to utilize that ol' CD burner that
came with the machine!

Thanks again for the help.

Just an update, Pegasus. I got to the sign on screen and entered his
user and p/w and got to his account, but it did not put his account
back into the fast logon window. I went into the registry and at the
key you mentioned there was no name of anybodys user accounts in that
folder.

But I did change their screen resolution from 800 X 600 back to 1024
X 768 and WHOA there is the user accounts all back like they used to
be!!! Can you explain that? :)
