Missing unopened mail notification in task bar

How does one restore the little envelope indicating
unopened mail (Outlook) in the task bar?
 
did you ever figure this one out? I have the exact same question.

go to Tools, Options, Preferences, email options, advanced email options,
put a check in th ebox in "show an envelope icon in the notification area"

that should do it.
