Missing Systray in XP Pro

Carl

I consider myself to be fairly I.T literate and don't find problems i cant
resolve from my own knowledge, google or the MS Knowledgebase.

That said, this has me slightly baffled.

I extracted a fairly large .rar file (few hundred mb). They system slowed so
i ended the process of Winrar. The computer rebooted and worked ok - with
the exception of the icons in the systray (the clock shows but thats it).

Firstly, i thought i may have altered a setting so i opened Taskbar & Start
menu properties. The tickbox for "Show the clock" was checked but the "Hide
Inactive icons" and "Customise" options were greyed out (they never were in
the past).

I rebooted - to no avail.

I noticed the following entry in Event Viewer - Applications:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 09/03/2005
Time: 19:19:47
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: DESKTOP2
Description:
Windows saved user (Hostname)\(Username) registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

The knowledge base article states there is no user action as this is a
system action.

I wondered if i had a virus, so i did a full system scan with the lastest
version of AVG Free 7 (all updated).

My system runs XP Pro SP2 (fully patched)

I've used the Microsoft Antispyware which cant find a problem (it too is
fully updated).

Interestingly, although i dont use the XP Firewall, i cant even open it now
(and i could when i was logged in before this became an issue).

I get the following message:

"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated
service is not running. Do you want to start the windows Firewall/Internet
Connections Sharing (ICS) service?"

I click yes and a dialog comes up saying "Windows cannot start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service."

I have to say, i'm slightly perplexed! I'm not aware of making any changes
to services running on the system.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

Carl
