Hi jegilbert,

ok so i don't know what happened other than i just dled kazaa lite-- i know first mistake- then i went to change from my admin to my husbands and my cpu just shut down. when i restarted it said that system32\hal.dl was missing and i needed to reinstall. i tried my xp boot disk-- no go. i have dled the makeboot from microsoft with the 6 disks and tried that but on the first disk it just keeps saying 'settup is configuring your hardware' . it will say that and go on to reboot- over and over. my husband wants to format but i KNOW i can get it back. help please

You have to boot from your XP CD. If necessary, go to the BIOS to
change the boot order.

Once you get to it, it'll ask if you want to repair, press R and
enter. It will ask which Windows installation you want to repair
(generally 1) and will ask for the administrator password used when
the system was set up.

Then type the following commands:

bootcfg /list
-- will show the list in boot.ini
bootcfg /rebuild
-- will repair it.

Good luck
