Missing Shortcut or Target file...

I run Win XP pro on 6 year old ARM laptop.
Is there any way for me to retrieve a file for which I can find the
shortcut, but not the file?
I performed a search of all files and folders, and found the shortcut to the
file I was looking for. When I try to open the file by double clicking on the
shortcut, I get a message telling me that the file has changed or been moved
(or something like that).
I have not used the file for some time, but would really like to get into it.
I don't remember deleting the file, and cannot think of a reason why I might
have done so....
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Just because the shortcut is still there doesn't mean the target file
is. Look at the shortcut's properties and see where it thinks the
target is and look there. You might also want to use the free Agent
Ransack search program which is far superior to the one built into XP.
If Agent Ransack doesn't find your file, then the file is gone. If this
is the case, you might be able to find the file by running data
recovery software on the machine.

Look in the properties of he shortcut for the target and search for the
file name. If you can't find the file then it's been deleted or
renamed. Search on key words in the file in case the file was renamed.
Look in the recycle bin. Lastly there are some utilities that will
help recover deleted files but their success depends on using them
relatively soon after the deletion with minimal use of the computer in
the interim.

Lastly, restore it from a current backup. Always have a full and
complete backup.

Greetings,

In such a situation a data recovery utility can be useful. When I got
in a simmilar situation recovery utility really helped. The one I used
was Undelete, it performed the operation really good and brought lost
files back. I suppose that might also help you.

Well, if it isn't our old friend coal_brona the spammer. Changed your
name, but not your sleazy tune.
