missing shell32.dll comtrol panel file, grateful for help!

Hi,

Yesterday i used the Disk Cleanup utility as i wanted to defrag but didn't
have enough space (9%) on my HD. Anyway, after running it, it suggested i
could safely remove/compress old/unused files, which i did.
Today i went to open the Internet Options in Control Panel but instead i
recieved this error message:

An exception occured while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpl.cpl",Internet Options".

I am thinking the Cleanup utility removed/compressed something it shouldn't!
Anyone have any suggestions, thank you in advance.

Pete.

Thanks for the reply Wes,

If i paste that into the run box and hit enter, i get the exact same error
message.

Pete,

Shoot, I was hoping that would work for you.

Can you access it by...
Open IE | Tools | Internet Options?

Same error message?
----

Try registering shell32.dll...
Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 shell32.dll | OK
----

Try running System File Checker...

Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow | OK
Have your XP CD ready to stick in your CD drive.

If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro Cd, stick the CD in the
drive *first* and then type the command.

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)

Have you run any anti-scumware utilities like Ad-aware, Bazooka Adware and
Spyware Scanner, HijackThis or Spybot S & D?

Update your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

Hi Wes,

Didn't have to try any of your suggestions as for some reason it just
started working. Strange, would running Ad-Aware or similar have caused this
then?

Thanks, Pete.
