missing second pane in win. explorere

I have dell dimension 4600 with winXP pro, all updates [except ie7].
Suddenly in win explorer, it oens with only one pane. the folders show up,
but selecting a file does not show the contents, becasue there is only one
pane. [It is a pain!

Any ideas?
I have not installed anything since yesterday when it worked. the 2 panes
setup is why I use 'win explorer' rather than 'my Computer' to find things
etc.
Any ideas welcome. Thankyou.

Win Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > Select "Show common tasks in folders"
