I, too, have been hit with the "missing or corrupt file: \windows\system32\config error. When I go to my XP cd and start the REcovery Console, it ask me to chose which windows to log on to ( it shows 1: C:\windows). I enter "1" and return, then a blue screen appears with "bad_pool_caller" with technical information
Stop: 0x000000c2 (0x000000043, 0xc55bc000,0x0000000,0x000000

Everytime I try to use the Recovery Console, the same message appears but with a different parameter for the memory lcoation i.e. c55b

How do I , firt, correct the problem so I can use the Recvovey Console; then, once corrected, repair the "windows\system32\confi

Help needed desperately...I do not want to have to fdisk!!!!!!!

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.

Have tried all modes....get the "missing or corrupt file message : windows\system32\confi

It seems I am in a loop...if I do recovery...I get the "bad_pool_caller" message. If I try f8 and any of the modes, I get the missing or corrupt file message.

Greetings --

It sounds like you may well have defective RAM, which could easily
be the original problem source.
