Hi,

I have an acer computer with pre installed xp media center edition.

On boot I cant get past a message re a missing or corrupt config sys file.
Acer donot supply recovery cd and have only offered the ability to wipe and
reinstall from the hard drive.

Last time I used the PC I was using Ipod shuffly - not sure if any
involvement here?

I have tried "last known good configuration" option but get same message to
put in a cd and press r for repair.

Any helpout there gratefully received..

Was this the exact message, "Windows XP could not start because the
following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"?

For the future - try to give accurate and complete details. ;-)

Unfortunately - to fix your issue, you will likely need a true Windows XP
Media Center (2002? 2005?) installation CD.

Do you have data files you need to recover?

What Acer model is your computer?

Do you have access to a second computer? What is that computer make and
model?

If you have access to a second computer you can either place the hard
drive from the first computer into the second computer as a second slave
drive or place the drive in an external drive cradle connected to the
second computer. Either way will most likely allow you to view and copy
data files to removeable media for safe keeping. You will not be able to
boot from the drive.

When you have recovered your data files you can use the recovery CD to
reinstall Windows XP. You will then need to update drivers and
reinstall programmes and windows updates.

Hope this helps.

=====================================================

I have fixed xp media center edition PC's with this procedure several times.

You can use a Windows XP Pro disk to help with the repair. Ask a friend or
neighbour if they have a disk.

Once you have attained this disk...follow the directions below to the
letter. Much more straight forward than MS reference already mentioned.
