Missing or Corrupt C\windows\systems32\config\system

Help!!! I have just had this error come onto my computer:
"windows caould not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt C\windows\system32\config\system

I followed the info about using F8 and trying to restore
to the last known time windows operated OK, but now it
simply gives me the same error message as above with the
following as well " you can attempt to repair this file
by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-
rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start.
The trouble is that takes me to full system restore, and
I really do not wish to destroy all the info on my hard
drive.

Is there any other way to restore the missing or corrupt
files?
