Missing NTLDR files

My son has a laptop & uses XP (he dosen't know which version). Apperently he
gets a message stating : NTLDR files missing. He says that there is only one
beep during the POST which to me means there is a possible memory problem. Is
there any way to resolve this issue without re-booting from disk & losing all
of his saved data & settings? My problem is that he lives 120 miles away.
Help please.

Hi,

One beep normally means the video check is ok.

NTLDR missing can have several causes, check the article posted by Anando.
It can also be caused if another drive is made to be the active drive, or if
NTLDR is damaged. Copying a new copy of it from the installation files will
resolve the latter scenario, while running fixboot from the Recovery Console
can help the second.
