When I open the Network connections folder in Control
Panel, it is empty. My LAN icon has disappeared and
therefore I can not change any IP info. Any ideas as to
how to re-generate the icon?

usually that means the network card isnt detected.
go to dos and type "ping localhost"
what does it say?

hm.
go to dos and type "ipconfig /all" and paste it.

is this on the computer you are using now?

First make sure that your Network Connections Service and Remote Access
Connection Manager services are running. If they are then compare the LAN
connections in the connections folder with the Network Adapter drivers in
device manager. If there is a Network Adapter driver that doesn't have a
corresponding connection in the connections folder then try reinstalling it.
