Missing Hard Drive Space

I have partitioned my 60GB HDD to 7GB 7GB and 46GB (lets call them C, D, and
E). All NTFS cleared and formatted, there should be no backup partition, e.g.
Ghost. Windows XP is installed under C: drive, all my daily activities are
saved on the E: drive, and D is for backup.

Originally, C: started off with only 2.4GB being used. That is the fresh
Windows XP install size. The intention is to isolate the Windows root folder
against all other programs for security purpose, so over the years I have not
installed anything under C:. However, I recently found out that I only have
700MB left on C: and that is causing issues for me to backup things to my
CD/DVDs. (Appearently Windows needs a lot more than 700MB to write to a full
700MB CD).

I have done all in my power and this only freed up space to 900MB (Del temp
files, internet temp, Disk cleanup, etc). If I say view hidden files, and
select everything under the root folder of C: as administrator, it only shows
up 3.48 GB being used. That leaves me with about 2.6GB not knowing where it
is being allocated to.

To sum up, the C: drive properties show 6.09GB being used (only 900MB left),
while properties of all folder & files under C: only take up 3.48GB.
Difference of 2.6GB.

Can someone please help me identify what the problem is here? What I need to
do in order to free up that 2.6GB that becomes significat given that the C:
drive is only a 7GB partition. Sorry about the long post, I wanted to get all
the info out at once. Thank you.
