Missing general templates

I have Office XP with the Service pack 3 updates installed on my machine.
Access 2002 is one of the applications. The general templates for Word and
PowerPoint are on my machine, but the general templates for Access are only
listed. They are not in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\.
Trying to open a specific general template from the menu listing general
templates that should be available if installed, results in a Windows
Installer error (I think 1631 but I've also seen error 1637). I have tried
reinstalling Office XP from my CD but got this message: "This patch cannot be
processed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows
Service Pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service."

That is my problem.

Huh? He's got a question about Access templates. What other newsgroup would
be more appropriate?

Here is the solution that I came up with. I went to office.microsoft.com,
then chose Access, then chose templates. I was presented with a list of
template titles for Access 2003 that are the same as what should be available
through the General Templates link on my Access 2002 new file menu. I chose
to download the database template that matched what I wanted to do. It
turned out OK. It was workable. Not as smooth as choosing a template
residing on my machine.

I tried to address the Windows Installer issue by downloading Windows
Installer 2.0 for Windows ME. Since, installing the update, I get a Windows
Installer error 1635 when I try to use the General Templates link on the new
file menu. And, I get a different error message if I try to install Office
XP on top of itself from the CD. Perhaps another time I will post this
second issue on a different forum, or try removing Office XP from the control
panel and then reinstalling it.
