turned on my desktop, a screen poped up and said file missing or
corrupt.

\windows\system32\config\system

gives the option to run XP cd and REPAIR...not sure what to do from
there

It is a system file which may be missing or corrupt. You can do a repair
install, but try a SFC first. SFC is a System File Checker for missing or
corrupt system files. Go to and have your WindowsXP install CD handy.
Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW (space between C and /) click OK, if any
files are missing or corrupt it will replace them.

thanks, I found the answer on the microsoft site and it actually
worked...little time consuming though.
