Missing FAx capability in Vista Premium

G

Guest

Sending faxes with my old XP/ HP All in one used to be a cinch. Now that I
have a Vista machine, suddenly I can't fax anymore ... HP says that Vista
does not provide faxing capabilites. It that correct???

Faxing worked fine in XP - Vista was supposed to be an upgrade; where is my
fax capability? I would have never bought Vista had I known it lacks this
service! What is the work around, now that I am stuck with this Vista?

Try Snappyfax.
Vista Business, Ultimate and Enterprise ONLY include Fax and Scan.
Vista Home Premium does not include Fax and Scan.

Please allow me to jump in here since I have the same complaint. I have a
OfficeJet 7310 4 in 1 connected by USB. Any solutions? Thanks.

What version of VISTA are you using?

Have you installed the HP full feature software:

» HP Full Feature Software and Drivers

03-2007 080.001.237.000 - 163.07M

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc
=en&product=391182&lang=en

If you are just using the driver in VISTA then you may be missing the
extra features.

If you have not installed the full feature software, remove any HP
software that may appear in Remove Programs; delete any HP icons for
the device in Fax & Scan and in Printers, unplug the USB cable from the
PC end and reboot.

Then install the new software by right mouse clicking on the downloaded
file and choosing Run as Administrator. Do not plug in the USB cable
until the installation tells you to or until [Finish].

So the BUISINESS version has Microsoft fax, even thought they might well have
a stand alone fax maciine. A home version user that might need to
occasionally send a fax is shut out.
Stupid, and a utility that I expected to be there -- but MS quietly
omitted this functionality.

This is quite scandalous. There is absolutely no justification for Microsoft
to have removed this important utility from Vista (apart from the business
versions). it is an attempt to screw more money out of the punters.

I refuse to be blackmailed by Microsoft in this way and therefore will NOT
be upgrading to Vista.

Perhaps if sufficient other people post likewise MS might think again (some
hope)!

I have just spent a week trying to find out how to fax with my new expensive
computer that has Vista Home Premium. What a waste of time. When I read the
specifications for my computer it had a fax modem - How dumb was I to think
that there would be software included to use it! I wonder if HP knows this.

HP knows that the Home versions of Vista don't include FAX capability.
Third-party FAX programs work fine, though.

That would be ideal, but not necessarily so. Dell included a Fax modem with
my new system running Vista Home Premium, but no software to use it. The
downloads available for my AIO at the Dell site refuse to function under
Vista, as does the software that came with the unit. Silly me, I thought MS
would include Fax software with the OS as it always has in the past.

Your issue is with Dell. If what you claim is true, it is inexcusable for
them to provide you with a fax modem but no fax software with which to use
it. They know and the rest of the world knows that Vista Home has no fax
software. Now you know too. Sorry, but assuming that every version of
Windows includes the same capabilities as previous versions is just naive.
Caveat emptor.

Naive it may be, but based on my experience with Windows dating back to the
first release, I had come to expect better from MS. With the exception of
ME, I have run every version of Windows since 1.2 or so, and Vista has given
me more grief in less than a month than all the others combined . Although
there have been compatibility issues when I've upgraded in the past, I have
never seen a capability simply removed as is the case here. If trusting MS
makes me an idiot in this case, I certainly have plenty of company judging
by what I've found trying to resolve this situation.

BTW, I have taken Dell to task over this, since the PC and AIO are both
theirs. After 2 remote assist sessions and numerous phone calls, they've
admitted there is a problem and promise a fix in January or so. I still
don't understand what MS gains by simply omitting a longstanding capability
and in the process antagonizing their loyal customers.

MS took the fax from ME also - had you run it you would have known.

If HP included a fax modem, then they surely included some software
to accompany it.

I skipped ME on the advice of several users who told me it sucked. My OS
prior to Vista was XP Home, and the fax capability was definitely there. It
still seems to me that MS could avoid a lot of customer dissatisfaction at
minimal cost by either including Fax & Scan with Vista for home users, or
provide a link to download it gratis as an add-in. Is Bill Gates so hard up
for cash that this is the only approach he can take? Those Mac commercials
trashing Vista are right on time as far as I'm concerned.

Not quite true. Lexmark wrote AIOC for Dell and unless Lexmark fixes it,
Dell can't do a thing about it.

All that may be true, but Dell sold me a Dell AIO printer, Dell sold me the
PC and associated Vista OS, and the Dell site has the supposedly Vista
compatible drivers which their tech guys finally admitted weren't Vista
compatible at all. In addition, the system is financed with Dell, who will
not get a dime from me until this mess is resolved to my satisfaction.
You'd think the purchase of 3 desktops and a laptop in 2 years would inspire
a little loyalty in return from the company.
