Missing DVD drive

I experienced an unexpected shutdown--acted as though I had put the system to
sleep but was in the middle of online activity. The computer would not "wake
up" afterward so I had to do a manual power up.
My DVD drive is now missing. I do not get any error messages of any kind.
I have physically removed the drive and rebooted. Shut down and reinstalled
the drive. No good.
The previous posts I've seen pertaining to similar problems all seem to deal
with error messages, but I do receive any. Likewise, I've had no trouble
with my drive before. It is Vista certified (so they say). Also, I was not
using the drive when the shutdown occured.
I suspect I am suffering from a registry corruption but I do not delve into
these areas regularly. I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed.

Also, has anyone else experienced this strange shut down? In addition to
this issue, my USB mouse intermittently fails after reboot. I have to keep
unplug/plug it in to make it work. System is new. Suggestions?

Thanks,
Miles

Even vague answers are appreciated, geezer10. I'll try the install repair.

I have removed the upper and lower limits from the DVD drive via the
registry and it suddenly reappeared. Still, what bothers me most is the
sudden "sleep"-like shutdown from which the system would not awake.

The usb mouse issue is consistent with this machine. I'm using the Abit
Fata1ity motherboard (my second one since the first had video issues) and I'm
wondering if it's a Vista driver issue. The malfunction is not consistent,
but it is regular.

Again, thanks for the reply.
