I am missing a driver named nvport.sys that is needed for my SoundMAX sound
card to function. I have a thinkpad running XP but cannot find the needed
driver.

My problem may have nothing to do with the nvport file missing. I did some
research on the web and found that many users have had problems with XP
losing the ability to load sound card drivers. I am getting an error that
says the driver is enabled but had not been started. This seems to have been
a problem for over 2 years. Does Microsoft have a fix for this problem? I
have seen solutions ranging from downloading swenum.inf to deleting a line
from the boot.ini file. I'd like an official Microsoft solution if one
exists. Thx.

Please post a copy of the Error Report from Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

My problem was solved immediately by taking text for the swenum.inf file off the net, saving it to a text editor with the inf file extension and then running add hardware and installing it as system hardware. I also had swenum.sys in the same folder that I installed the inf file from. My sound was restored immediately. What started my problems was when I loaded a software driver off the net for my son's finepix camera. It caused my CD/DVD player to quit working a couple days ago along with my sound card I guess. I wonder what else was corrupted in my XP system????
