Missing Dialup Icon

I purchased a computer with Win XP on it from a local store. Ever since I
bought it, I have had trouble (near impossibility) with having the dialup
connection icon showing in the taskbar. I can create connections but they
do not show up in the taskbar. I have opted to "Show all icons" but to no
avail. When I click on Start-Connect To, none of my connections are
present. When I go to Show All Connections, they do not show up there
either.

I wrote a newsgroup message (probably this one) once before and received
advice to go to a
certain website and implement one of their changes. It worked for awhile
(2-3 weeks) but now it is gone.

Also, I have noticed that my computer will try to dial the internet
automatically from time to time. I do have Outlook Express set up to check
for messages on a regular basis but it is set to not connect if it isn't
already connected. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tony
