missing desktop icons

My desktop icons are duplicating themselves. Moving to recycle bin only make
them duplicate again. Even cleaning up the desktop with the cleanup wizard
and having them put in unused icons only made the folder duplicate itself.

You have probably tried it, but have you updated your virus scanner and run
a full sweep? Cause this sounds like a virus. But if this fails try something
else.
