Missing 'defrag' and 'Transfer Wizard' on Accessories

MapleE.

Hi:
When I tried to 'defrag' this morning, I found 'defrag' and 'Transfer
Wizard' on system Tools
on Accessories were all gone, although I luckily accessed both by typing on
'Help and Support'
on Start at the left bottom corner.

How to restore 'defrag' and 'Transfer Wizard,' both of which are critical
on 'System Tools' on Accessories - Program - Start.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Isn't the real name dfrg.msc? Find that file in \windows\system32 and make
a new shortcut for it.
Can't help with the transfer wizard because I don't know its name.

What you are most likely missing are just shortcuts to the real program.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Right click on your Start button and select "Explore All Users"
from the menu.
Navigate to the All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools folder.
Right click an open spot in the right hand pane and select
New -> Shortcut from the menu.
For Disk Defragmenter, enter the following in the location box,

%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc

Create another shortcut for the File and Settings Transfer
wizard and enter the following in the location box,

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe

If you're looking for an automated solution, you might want to
take a look at this article:

Hi:
Thanks for responses.

I followed the instruction, below. However, the problem has been not
solved,
as seeing there have NO 'defrag,' nor 'transfer wizard' shortcuts on
accessories.

It appears to me that those 'two' hiding somewhere inside System 32, because
I am able to access both by typing on 'Help and support.'

Is there any solution to this problem?

Thanks,

The only other approach I can suggest is the following:

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32
folder.
Find the file named dfrg.msc.
Right click on it and select Send to -> Desktop (create
shortcut) from the menu.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\system32\usmt
Find the file named migwiz.exe.
Right click on it and select Send to -> Desktop (create
shortcut) from the menu.

You should now have two new shortcuts on your Desktop. Right
click the one named dfrg.msc and select Rename from the menu.
Change the name to Disk Defragmenter. Right click the one named
migwiz.exe and change the name to File and Settings Transfer
Wizard.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories

In the top right hand corner of Windows Explorer, hit the
"Restore down" button. That's the middle one right next to the
red X. Next, right click the two shortcuts on your Desktop and
drag them into the Windows Explorer window. Release the right
mouse button and select "Move here" from the menu that pops
out.

Good luck

Hi:
Many thanks for your help.

I rescued 'Transfer Wizard' along with "Restore' icons, both of which
I put on desktop as following your detailed instruction. Thanks!

However, for some reason I am still not able to find 'defrag,' even though I
looked for it many times.

Wonder where the 'defrag' strayed?

Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for your knowledge and time.

If you were able to start the Disk Defragmenter from within
Help and Support then the file should still be on your
computer.

Go to Start -> Search and enter dfrg.msc in the search box. It
should be located in C:\Windows\System32.

If you cannot find that file, you can use your XP installation
CD to restore the file. Here's how:

Put your XP installation CD in your CD drive.
Hit the X next to Exit when the installation menu launches.
Open a command prompt window by going to Start -> Run and
entering cmd.exe in the Open box.
Note: You can also go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories ->
Command Prompt to open the same window.
At the prompt, enter the following command substituting the
correct drive letter for "CD DRIVE". On most systems the CD
drive is the D drive.

Expand "CD DRIVE":\i386\dfrg.ms_ C:\Windows\System32\dfrg.msc

Hit Enter.
You should see a message confirming that the file has been
expanded.

Post back if you don't have an XP installation CD and I'll come
up with an alternative way to replace this file.

Good luck

Hi:
Thanks for your help. I truly appreciate it.

When I used 'Search' at Start, I found the following,

dfrg.: C:\1386
However, I have no clue to access this site, C:\1386

I'd really want to use the instruction you provided below,
however I prefer to restore this missing file/icon without
CD disk because of my limited computer knowledge.

Also,
Post back if you don't have an XP installation CD and I'll come
up with an alternative way to replace this file.
As much as possible, I want an alternative way to replace this file.

Many, many Thanks,

Run the search again and double click on dfrg. Does it start
the Disk Defragmenter? If so, do the following:

Right click on dfrg and select "Open Containing Folder" from
the menu.
This should open up the I386 folder with dfrg.msc highlighted.
Right click on dfrg.msc and select Copy from the menu.
Next, go to Start -> Run and enter the following in the Open
box,

C:\Windows\System32

Click OK.
This should open the System 32 folder.
In the right hand pane, right click an open spot and select
Paste from the menu.
Once dfrg.msc is pasted into the System32 folder you can right
click on it and select "Send to Desktop (create shortcut) from
the menu.

Keep in mind that you can copy and paste any of the shortcuts
you created on your Desktop into the appropriate spot on your
Start Menu by doing the following.

Right click a shortcut you created on the Desktop and select
Copy from the menu.
Go to Start and move your mouse pointer to Accessories ->
System Tools.
Right click on System Tools and select Open All Users from the
menu.
This should open the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools folder.
Right click an open spot in the right hand pane and select
Paste from the menu.

Good luck
