Missing Contacts

About I year ago I changed from using Lotus Organizer to Outlook 2003 for my work. I am noticing that I occasionally lose an odd contact completely and once lost as many as 10. Has anyone any idea what is happening and how I can stop this?
Could it be because I now have over 5000 contacts?
