I have xp home edition on Compaq Presario and system will
not boot because \windows\system32\config\system is
missing or corrupt. I tryed recovery console (chkdsc /r)
and process goes to 75% complete then back to 50% then to
74% then back to 50% and eventually hangs up. I also
tryed "knowledge base article" 307545 but process responds
with cannot find config\system file, all the other copy
and delete commands for the other files work. If I
reinstall XP warning comes up saying 'My Documents"
contents may be deleted-- Is this true? Any suggestions
on how to fix problem without losing data. Thanks!

Try this...Go to START and click RUN, type in cmd
click OK. In the prompt window type sfc /scannow
be sure of the space between sfc / now click the enter
key on your keyboard. Also insert your XP-CD in CD-ROM, it
will look for the missing files there...Good luck.
