Missing Buttons on Task Bar

When I open an application like excel or word etc. the
button for the program does not appear on the task bar at
the bottom of the screen like it used to. In order to
switch between programs I have to press control, alt,
delete and select "switch to" to get the program back up.
Any ideas ?
