Missing Built-In Toolbars in Internet Explorer

My wife is running WIN ME with IE 6 and the built-in
toolbars have disappeared. When IE opens, there are no
toolbars at the top of the page, therefore no way to reset
the toolbars, type in URL's, etc., etc. Any suggestions
on how to retrieve the toolbars would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi John,

Try this procedure and reset the toolbar setting from Registry

- Close all browser windows (Important)
- Open registry editor (start>run>regedit.exe)
- goto the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects
Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and Windows
Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't work,
delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relevant sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and
select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

Automated fix available for dowbload from:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_ToolbarFix.zip

(OR)

Delete the Key "Toolbar"
Restart Windows. The toolbar configuration is not reset to defaults.

Ramesh,

Thanks for your quick reply. I chose the first option to
delete the sub-key "ITBarLayout" under the sub-
key "WebBrowser". I then went to the website that you
referred to and it took me to your website, not Doug
Knox's. I manually went to his website and did not find
anything that looked like at ToolBarFix.zip. Also, in the
URL you sent, it had "XP" in the line. My wife is running
WIN ME. Is the fix the same for both systems?

Thanks again,

John

The .reg fix works for Win Me also.

Option 1. Backup the Toolbar registry key and delete the entry entirely.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]

Option 2. Toolbar fix from Doug's site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_toolbarfix.htm
