missing boot.ini file

How do I fix the following error?

Invalid boot.ini file
booting from C:\WINNT\

boot.ini is not located anywhere on my hardrive. On a
related note, what (file) is being used to boot the OS in
place of the missing boot.ini one?

Thanks,
Brian

Boot.ini might be there. In windows explorer go to tools|folder
options|view and check or uncheck the boxes for showing hidden files and
showing system files. Then look in your root directory for boot.ini

Is this XP? I know this happens sometimes in XP - not sure why.

Is there a boot.bak hidden file in the root? If so try copying it to
boot.ini or you could create a boot.ini from scratch something like:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000"
/fastdetect

Now keep in mind this might cause your system to hang, in which case
you would have to boot to recovery console or the XP equivalent, and
delete it.

Boot.ini just tells Windows what drive and volume to boot from. I
assume that in this case it assumes first drive, first volume.

You can rerun the W2K install CD, but tell it to Repair. Deselect all the
options apart from the one referring to the boot file (can't remember the
exact wording) and it should fix it.

At least, it did for me.

I think that the repair option is the best one at this
point. Thanks for the recommendation.
