That's right. You can add it back (in the same way that you can add any
other folder to the Places Bar), but the "Add to Favorites" button will
still be missing.

I found a (fairly klutzy) workaround. Since the powers-that-be at Microsoft
apparently have long believed that users see no distinction between Internet
sites and their own files, any display of favorites has traditionally
included both--and maybe others, too. That is, until Word 2003, which
eliminated the Favorites function in favor of "Places." However, if your
version of Word 2003 is like mine you should see the Favorites folder listed
in Places in Word 2003's Open dialogue. That's where it was in Word 2002
and, I think, in prior versions, too. You can still add a Word 2003 file to
that folder, but you have to do it through Windows Explorer. Highlight the
file and click Favorites, Add to Favorites. Once you have the file marked
as a Favorite, you access it pretty much like in prior versions of Word by
opening the Favorites folder.

Well, I don't think my work-around works anymore. I think there was another
MS upgrade. Unless I am missing something, Windows Explorer now allows you
to Add to Favorites, but it seems to add only folders and not files. I am
now doing this by creating shorcuts to the files I want to bookmark, moving
the shortcut to the favorites folder and then renaming the shortcut. This
is at least twice as klutzy.
