Minor loss of fidelity

I'm currently evaluating Excel 2007 in our office to see what the issues
are. I've got it configured for compatibility mode which I think we will be
using as the standard across the company for the foreseeable future as all
of our clients are on earlier versions.

I've just made some changes to a small spreadsheet and Excel is warning me
about minor loss of fidelity:

----cut here---
Some cells or styles in this workbook contain formatting that is not
supported by the selected file format. These formats will be converted to
the closest format available.
----cut here---

This is all well and good but I don't want to turn off the warning (as it's
useful) but how do you find out which four cells are effected? I've not
entered any formatting that is unusual for Excel 2003.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob

If you click on the hyperlink for Find, it will take you to the relevant
part of the sheet.

Not sure what you mean by a hyperlink for find?

Thanks, Rob.

Hi Rob

In the dialogue box which comes up in the Compatibility checker to show
the loss of fidelity, the word Find within the white pane is blue and
underlined, and is a hyperlink.
When this is clicked, it will take you to the range of cells where the
loss of fidelity occurs.

I don't have a find hyperlink. The only hyperlink on there is labelled Help
and that just opens the online help.

What is a bit unusual is that I've closed and saved the document in XLS
format and then reopened it and the incompatibility is still there. How can
that be? If it's saved in compatibility mode, the incompatible formatting
will have been discarded won't it? How come it's come back...

Confused!

Hi Rob

If you want to send the file direct, I would be happy to take a look.
to mail direct, remove NOSPAM from my address.

Hi Rob

I agree, in your case there is no Find option.
The 4 items it has a fidelity problem with, are in cells A15:D25 because
of the colour.

I think it must be because there is a different colour palette for
XL2007 from XL2003, or the setting for the cells may use the
TintandShade property, which doesn't exist in XL2003
Opening the file in XL2007, returns a value of 3 for Font.ColorIndex,
whereas opening in XL2003 produces a value of 53.

I think the warning, therefore, is merely the fact that the colour will
show slightly differently in the file when opened in XL2003.

I think you are correct here as now you remind me, that was the last thing I
did - added colour to some of the cells. I remember thinking at the time
"hmm, not sure I like this new Office 2007 palette - it's all a bit bland
and pastel" :-)

Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob

I forgot to add, there is an option under
Office button>Excel Options>Save>Choose what colours will be seen in
previous versions of Excel.
