minor annoyance

For some reason my audio alerts from apps are a little late. For
instance, I use IM, and the audio doesn't sync with messages I
receive...about 1 or 2 seconds behind. This happens with other apps
too. What could cause that?

Most likely there is something running in the background - perhaps disk
indexing or something - so the audio sounds when the cpu has a moment to
sound it. I'd check to see what processes are running automatically and turn
them off if you don't need them.

I looked at that...and then checked on another computer running XP. It
is doing the same thing, so it's probably the apps. Thanks for the
suggestion.
