Minolta scan multi II + vuescan 8.0 + mac os 10.3

Just updated to vuescan 8.0 hoping that I would have more success scanning
in OS 10.3.3 using my Minolta Dimage Scan Multi II (SCSI interface).

I recently updated the firmware on the Orange Micro SCSI card to ver 1.35 as
recommended - Now System profiler recognizes both the card and the scanner.

Vuescan boots and recognizes the scanner, but as soon as I try to preview a
scan the spinning beachball of doom appears...

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Could you try a Belkin Firewire->SCSI adapter? Mac OS X 10.3 has
a buggy SCSI driver.

Ed:

The Belkin website doesn't feature drivers for Mac OS X 10.3 and states:
"Mac OS-X - Mass storage devices only (CD-rom drives, hard drives, zip
drives, etc)"

But if you think this will work, I'm willing to give it a shot.

It works well with most SCSI scanners on Mac OS X. It doesn't
need any drivers, and it makes SCSI scanners look like SBP2 scanners.

Thanks Ed

I've found one Ebay and should receive it later this week - I'll send an
update after it arrives.

By the way, I tried Vuescan 8 again and managed to get the scanner to
perform the calibration routine, but it locked up when I tried to get it to
preview 35mm slides...

Alas, I guess I'll have to wait for the Belkin adapter.

It seems to be the auto focus that has the problem. Try setting
"Input|Auto focus" to "Manual".

Just had a chance to try a couple of quick scans using the Belkin Firewire
to SCSI adapter and it seemed to work fine - although as suggested in a
previous post, I set the focus setting in Vuescan to manual.

BTW I was able to scan from my SCSI connection in this same manner, but
experienced a lock up when I tried to preview the second frame on the 35mm
slide holder - Using the Belkin adapter I was able to scan frame 2 with no
problem - Next I'll try using auto focus again w/the belkin adapter.

Any idea why the auto focus setting causes such problems?

The SCSI driver on Mac OS X seems to have problems with some
kinds of zero-length SCSI commands. These are the type of
commands used during auto focus.

Did auto focus work ok with the Belkin Firewire->SCSI adapter?

Have you tried Mac OS X 10.3.4 yet?
