Minolta 5400 with firewire

Just bought a Minolta 5400 to use with Win XP Pro (Sp2). I can use it
with the USB connection but not with the 1394. I get an error message
"This device cannot start (Code 10)". Windows Control Panel confirms
that the Firewire card is working correctly but uninstalling and
re-installing doesn't solve the problem. Guess I could settle for USB
but the speed of Firewire is what attracted me to the 5400. Anyone
help, please? (I've given up on Minolta help!)

I don't know what is causing your problem, but you will find
that the USB2 and firewire speeds are about the same.
The scan speed is the limiting factor, not the interface.

Has your firewire port worked with anything else?

Mike

P.S. - Ordered my Minolta 5400 last night. :)

My SE 5400 is connected to the Firewire connector on my Dell Dimensions
computer and have had no problems.
I use Windows XP Pro with SP1. Have not installed SP2 because of all the
messages I saw about security troubles with SP2. I have networked computers
here in my home.

==================================
Ken,
I've had a 5400 hooked up to my notebook with a D-Link USB2 PCI card.
I've had various problems with connections through my USB2 PCI card.
Sometimes the scan speeds are exceedingly slow. Sometimes the Dimage
software crashes. Sometimes there is no link at all. D-Link tech
support said there is probably a problem with their card and I should
return it to them. Windows indicates my USB2 card is working correctly,
but they're wrong. I have an exterior 2nd HDD also connected to the
card and when the scanner is malfunctioning, the ext. HDD also malfunctions.

Isn't there a similar possiblity with your Firewire card? The D-Link
USB2 card I bought was a mid-priced card. Perhaps I need a better and
more reliable card like an Adaptec and perhaps the same is true for you.

Thanks everyone for your help/comments. Haven't been able to test the
Firewire card with anything else because I've nothing else compatible.
I bought the card the other day specially to work with my new Minolta
scanner. Windows says the card is working (though I guess that's not
infallible) and I'm using the cable that came with the scanner. Robert
(Thanks, Robert) says there is little to choose in terms of speed
between the two interfaces and so I guess I'll settle for USB -
although the problem with Firewire will continue to niggle. Don't feel
like buying another card tho! Enjoy your scanner Mike. Think I'll like
mine when I'm used to it. Have been using a Canon 4000 previously -
v.good but TOO slow.

1. Under Control Panel|System Properties|Device Manager, click on 1394 and
verify that WinXP believes it is there, and that the driver is there. FWIW the
driver I have is Microsoft 5.1.2535.0 (date: 2001.07.01).

2. Under Control Panel|Network Connections you should find the 1394 connection

3. Under Control Panel|Scanners and Cameras you should find the 5400

USB is slow but USB 2.0 is about the same as Firewire in speed for scanning.

As a last resort, uninstall the Minolta software completely; remove the firewire
card from the system. Restart and shutdown. Re-install the Firewire card and
restart. After it is fully recognized by the system, then shutdown and restart
yet again before installing the Dimage scan s/w.

Good luck,
Alan

Good advice! And furthermore---do not connect the
scanner until the Dimage Scan software is installed!
Then connect the scanner, re-boot the system, turn
on the scanner, and then start the Dimage Scan soft-
ware.

I am using the Elite 5400 with a Windows XP SP1
machine over the Firewire interface with no problems.

Me too. That is I installed pre-SP1 and I am now at SP2 ... no probs at all.

Thanks again guys. I followed all your suggestions and now the
firewire is working. Don't know what the answer was but the outcome
was successful. Now to the chore of a lifetime of negs and slides to
be scanned. Guess I'll have to be very selective!

Great. Glad to help as inane as the procedure is...

Being selective is more difficult than it sounds.

Doing large scan jobs can be very tedious. I suggest you figure out a schedule
where you scan on specific days of the week, and that you scan no more than x
images per session. If you marathon it, you will get tired of it quickly and it
will be difficult to complete the job. This is my experience, in any case. Now
I limit my scanning to a few hours per week and I find I do a better job and
that it is more interesting to view the images.

YMMV.

Cheers,
Alan
