Migration Hell II

Michael

You all know my intent to move to a new computer. See config of old
machine below this jive.

While I bought the new machine because the old one died? See "ODD FIX
FOR DEAD BOX"...It's alive.

Anyway, now I have the option of using the network to transfer data.

1. Does the network migration path hold any risks? (I'm not concerned
about time/speed) Before I expected I'd have to slave the drive(s) to
the new machine and use Drive Copy.

I'd *prefer* to leave the drive(s) in the old box and simply copy the
partitions (contents) over to the re-formatted/re-partitioned new,
single drive.

Of course I will have to have at least one OS in the new machine to do
that...--XP is the natural choice as it's new, I lose nothing with a
clean install.

2. As I will have a FAT16 and will sys DOS, I know *whatever* I do with
W2k/XP, ---DOS must be in first. Since I wish to install XP early (after
DOS) to network, can W2k repair/upgrade clean install (what ever I get
away with) occur after XP--does it matter? W2k *is* going in last...is
the final resolution with W2k in the new drive the final step ?...No
need to go back to "fix' XP after W2k is in?

3. I *will* be able to boot W2k from F:\? I need to keep the current
drive letter arrangements? I believe I can? Does it matter where XP goes?

Depending on #1 (do I network to copy). My plan is thus:

A, Reformat\partition the new (40 gig) drive with either PM Magic in DOS
or with several other DOS based programs that can give me a lot of
control of size and config. I love DOS--panic with FDISK...go figure...

(Though keeping the drive letter assignments as they are in the *two*
old drives---I will increase their size---can eliminate\combine O:\ and
P:\---not much is there.

B. I'll have the small DOS FAT16 partition in C:\--I'll sys it, and move
my DOS apps over. They may come in handy early on...

C Next, I wish to get the OS in, (XP, as it can be a clean install) so I
can use it to network/copy the rest of the partition's content over. XP
will go into the third partition (D:\ has active apps---I prefer leaving
it there as D:\), thus replacing W2k in the current set-up with XP.

Will I have any problem as my CDROM is currently I:\---Even though I
re-partition the new drive, what/were will the CDROM be show in the new
drive---I can renam/stick it at the end of the alphabet with Disk Manager?

D Currently, W2k in the first (F:\) partition of my current HD1 will go
to F:\ in the new drive---But, it will then be in partition #4 on the
new HD0. We ok with that?

I will only be booting to three OS's: DOS, XP and W2k.

F. The last step, if everyone approves so far...Slide the W2k disk in
the new ROM and see what it can or can't do with W2k in F:\.

Jeeze, I don't even know if it will *see* it. If not then I clean
install W2k...[sigh]...and re-install a jillion apps and re-configure
them [looong sigh].

If repair finds it W2k, I let it do the full works. Hey, I've had to do
two or three repairs before all is fixed after a migration...this is
easily the most challenging---and hope it boots. ("Never assume the
first Repair failure is one's last") Yeah, I gotta intall SP4 and IE6
again...

With a bit of luck W2k will boot (I am prepared to adjust the boot.ini
after so much tampering)

What am I missing--other than a clean install of W2k, off the bat. I
won't budge there---I'm gonna try upgrade/Repair at least a couple of
times (*If* the install disk sees it...)
