After completing the migration from ME to XP, can I
delete any ME files and if so, which files can be
deleted, is there any downside, and approximately how
much space will be freed.

If you upgraded from Windows ME you can delete the uninstall files.
See "How to Remove the Windows XP Uninstallation Files"
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308008). After doing that you can
no longer uninstall Windows XP.

Please take the following advice:

Annihilate ME. Kill ME. You don't want ME around any
more. And after you are done with ME, then perform a
fresh install with XP.

(Hey...at least Windows ME had one good quality...it's
name was fun to use in sentences.)
