There is the Windows XP "Files and Settings Wizard". This
utility will save Windows customizations and normal user files.
It will create a container module, Img00001.Dat and a status
file. The utility is customizable, so you pick components to
include.
It is limited in the 3rd-Party applications it will support. I think
it will handle Adobe Acrobat Reader and a few others.
If you are using Office XP, it also has a "Save My Settings"
tool, that will backup settings.

their machines. On this drive keep your My Documents, Favs,
Mailbox, Pictures, etc. It is easy to re-direct Windows to use
these folders/files. The benefit is your data is separate from XP
and subsequently makes it easier to backup (CD-R, DVD-R).

You cannot easily migrate Apps. Probably the only way is to use eg Norton
Ghost to take a mirror image of the disk or move the disk to yr new pc. This
is probably not particularly desireable as you will the be using yr origonal
o/s configeration.
Bite the bullit and reinstall yr apps on the new system.

files. Does the files have some other extensions in these operating
systems?

Surely youve answered yourself; Backup/Copy to cd-r

Most all of those files are found within the profile on PC's
running Windows 2000/XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\'LoginName'
2-a/b are not pre-existing files, but done from the FILE
option (Import/Export) inside Internet Explorer
