I've got only one mid file I would like to convert to mp3.

You can do so with timidity++ (MIDI to WAV) and lame (WAV to MP3).
I do not have URLs for the English versions, but you should easily find
them with Google. timidity++ is ~3MB, lame ~0,6 MB.
Oh, you need also some Wavetable data, that is about 35 MB.

The combination works quite well, at least I never had any problems.

Like most of these things, they think we speak klingon; it's well worth
persevering with this one, and when you get it running it seems to be
really stable.

I got it running mostly by trial and error, but the knowledge is hidden in
there.

I would like to give a step by step guide, but I've just had a look and
remember the blundering, so I don't think I can, but I'll try to help with
specific points
