It would have to be one of those old-fashioned mics with a handle. New ones
look like a baby's pacifier. But who are we to judge how someone wants to
create a document? I've "self-handicapped" myself because I wear my nails
long so maybe I need to dig out the mic that came with my computer and try
it. If I can't find it, I bought a headphone/mic combination, maybe I'll try
that.
Seriously, you can use a microphone, but the method depends on what
version of Office you have. Try asking the Help about "speech
recognition". If it's there, it will tell you how to set it up.
If it doesn't have any such topic, you need to buy separate software
such as Dragon Naturally Speaking or Via Voice.
